WHAT IS NECROTRAP?
From NECROSOCIETY Wiki, the necrotrap archive
Necrotrap is a genre of hard electronic music created by the NECROSOCIETY collective in 2021. In the simplest terms, it is animalistic, distorted, and aggressive: music that disturbs and provokes. The genre draws from a wide range of influences including trap and metal at its core, with industrial, dark ambient, and lighter electronic touches (drum and bass, dubstep) used sparingly, smashing them together into something deliberately chaotic and heavy.
The name itself comes from the Greek nekros (dead) combined with trap, reflecting the genre's obsession with death, destruction, and the darker corners of human existence. Necrotrap is not background music. It is confrontational by design, not made to sit in a playlist quietly.
Sound & Production
Necrotrap production is defined by its distorted yet clean approach, a signature contradiction that makes it instantly recognizable. Tracks are built around heavy, prominent 808 basslines (sometimes clean, sometimes pushed through heavy distortion, never one fixed formula), layered with samples, dark textures, and drum patterns pulled from across electronic music. The result often plays like a cinematic score, something that could be ripped out of a movie or a video game.
Key sonic characteristics include:
- Heavy 808s — The foundation. Prominent, hard-hitting low-end that can sit clean or get pushed through heavy distortion, depending on the track and the artist
- Electronic influence — Pulls from electronic music broadly rather than any single dance genre, showing up mostly in the mixing style and the overall production approach
- Metal influence — Shows up most in the intensity and the vocal delivery. The raw, aggressive energy (the screaming, the growls, the vocal fry) is the biggest thing necrotrap pulls from metal
- Samples & textures — Movie and video-game samples, dark textures, and found sounds layered into the production, sometimes subtle, sometimes upfront
- Vocals — A wide range: rapping, yelling, screaming, growling, vocal fry, whispers and whisper-screams, often distorted and layered. Delivery is usually aggressive and raw, though some artists run cleaner
Most of the time everything is pushed to the max (loud, aggressive, and in your face), though some artists work with cleaner, more restrained styles.
Aesthetics & Themes
Necrotrap operates within a defined set of aesthetic territories that separate it from generic dark music:
- Terroristic aesthetics — Militant imagery, warfare references, themes of organized violence and tactical operations
- Horror — Slasher films, serial killer references, gore, body horror, occult imagery
- Hacking & cyber — Digital warfare, surveillance, system infiltration, tech-noir visuals
- Animalistic aggression — Primal, raw, stripped of pretense. The music and the visuals reflect something feral and unrestrained
Visually, necrotrap artists employ deliberately low-quality image processing, guns, militant imagery, and horror cinema influences to create an aesthetic that feels raw and real rather than polished. This extends to album artwork, music videos, and social media presence. The visual identity is as important as the sound itself. Both work together to create a complete atmosphere.
A lot of it is shock value, and that is the point. The same way horror movies exist to disturb, necrotrap exists to go where other music will not. It is meant to be extreme. Not all of it is purely for shock, but that is a big part of what makes it what it is.
Origins & Creation
Necrotrap was created by NECROSOCIETY in 2021. Co-founders HXLX, Gorejit (a former member) and Tsaruicide formed the collective and started making music that went beyond what trap metal was doing at the time. Nobody sat down and said "we are inventing a genre." They were all just making the music they wanted to make, and it became something that needed its own name.
The early collective (HXLX, Tsaruicide and former member Gorejit) built the sound through tracks that combined the aggression of metal with heavy trap bass and electronic production. Tsaruicide was there from the jump, helped build every step of it, and is now a manager of the collective. As the group grew to include members like 8SEEKER, KARATEL, SENTFROMIRAQ, and others, each brought their own styles and expanded what necrotrap could be.
NECROSOCIETY did not adopt necrotrap from elsewhere. They all built it together. The genre, the name, and the whole aesthetic come from this collective.
Relation to Trap Metal
People often call necrotrap "trap metal," and while there is overlap, that label is outdated and does not capture what necrotrap actually is. Trap metal as a broader movement produced many sub-genres and offshoots, but necrotrap is not one of them. It came from experimenting with trap and metal and evolved into its own genre, separate from what most people think of when they hear "trap metal."
The key differences:
- Electronic depth — Necrotrap pulls from electronic music as a whole, not just hip-hop and metal. Trap metal generally stays closer to a hip-hop and metal fusion without that broader electronic influence
- Aesthetic specificity — Where trap metal has a loose visual identity, necrotrap has a highly specific aesthetic language rooted in horror, terrorism, and hacking culture
- Collective origin — Necrotrap was not a scene that developed organically across multiple unrelated artists. It came out of one collective, NECROSOCIETY, and the music its members wanted to make
- Production philosophy — The "distorted yet clean" approach and the emphasis on maxed-out, hard-hitting production sets necrotrap apart from the more raw, lo-fi tendencies of early trap metal
In short: necrotrap is not trap metal. It is built from trap and metal, but it is its own genre, separate from trap metal as the term is understood today, and distinct enough in its sound, aesthetics, and origin to warrant its own classification.

Necrotrap is one of Spotify's own genres. NECROSOCIETY also keeps the official NECROTRAP playlist on Spotify.
